Rhapsody Radar 2012 #8: Romain Virgo
by Marley Lovell | July 17, 2012
Since winning Television Jamaica's Rising Stars talent competition at 17, Romain Virgo has been on the fast track to international stardom; with a soulful and powerful voice to compliment his stellar songwriting, the teenage sensation has transformed into a burgeoning heavyweight.
His prize was the opportunity to record with Penthouse Records' Donovan Germain, the man behind classics from Beres Hammond, Buju Banton, Wayne Wonder, Tony Rebel and others; with that type of legacy behind him, Romain's future was extremely bright. He delivered. His 2010 self-titled debut got him off and running with tracks like "Love Doctor" and the breakout single "Mi Caan Sleep"; now, fears of a sophomore slump have been obliterated by The System, a full breakout album. His flawless vocals have matured, and here they complement Jamaica's best and most seasoned producers on songs that all have the potential to become timeless classics: For anyone stuck in a dead-end job, "Another Day Another Dollar" is an absolute anthem. The album has completely shifted the focus of his body of work from R&B-inspired lover's rock to a sound that transcends race and culture. Follow him wherever he goes next.
