Senior Year, 1999: The Latin Explosion

by Judy Cantor-Navas  |  October 1, 2013

Never was the word caliente used so many times to describe music as in 1999, the year that Latin pop crossed over. The "Latin explosion" was lead by Ricky Martin, who sashayed his way into the Grammys in a pair of unforgettable leather pants. Shakira shook her hips to her early hits, and club dancefloors exploded into a chorus of "Bailamos" as non-Spanish speakers sang along with Enrique Iglesias. It was a year of big breaks for future superstars like Alejandro Sanz and Christina Aguilera, too. The music of 1999 foreshadowed the strength of today's U.S. Latino culture, and produced this playlist of surprisingly enduring tracks. So go ahead, "Shake Your Bon Bon" to these groundbreaking Latin hits. (Leather pants optional.)
