King Tuff
Kyle Thomas (aka King Tuff) likes wrapping his scrappy, lo-fi mischief inside a keen understanding of rock 'n' roll's short but tangled history. In this sense, the Los Angeles artist isn't unlike Kurt Vile. But while Vile is interested in vintage roots rock, King Tuff is obsessed with the sugary excesses of classic power pop and glam. This is so wonderfully obvious on "Keep on Movin'," which sounds like Sweeney Todd by way of The Knack. Even more over the top is "Stupid Superstar" and how it echoes both Teenage Fanclub and Enuff Z'nuff, who were the Cheap Trick of pop metal -- oh wait...

Speakeasy: King Tuff

by Rhapsody TV

King Tuff's self-titled Sub Pop debut is one of our favorite garage-pop albums of 2012; here, we chat with him about his artistically inclined (and somewhat subversive) family, the classiest way to hold a microphone, how easy it is to write songs sometimes and more.
