Stravinsky Fest: Soloists & Chamber Groups

by Seth Colter Walls  |  May 30, 2013

With the 100th anniversary of Igor Stravinsky's riot-starting 1913 ballet The Rite of Spring now upon us, there's no better time to do a deep dive into the composer's glorious catalog. And so, every day this week we're offering a new playlist highlighting a different aspect of his enduring genius. Enjoy.

As much as Igor Stravinsky is associated with writing for the orchestra, he also composed plenty of pieces worthy of attention by elite soloists and chamber groups. Early in her career, prodigy (and Bach expert) Hilary Hahn proved her interest in 20th-century repertoire by taking on Stravinsky's violin concerto. Maurizio Pollini put Stravinsky's arrangements of three dances from Petrouchka on his modernist-heavyweight program of solo piano flights. And as for chamber groups, the Pierre Boulez-led Ensemble InterContemporain proved it had a range beyond Boulez's own atonalist sound world when it took on all the jazzy, humorous edges of the neoclassically informed "Dumbarton Oaks." Check out all these performances (and others) in the appended playlist.
