What has changed in the past 10 years of dance music? In some ways, very little. Rappers like Kelis were flirting with club remixes; deep house ruled supreme, as evidenced by hits from Oscar G and Ralph Falcon; and disco was everywhere, from Lindstrom's "I Feel Space" to the punk-funk of The Rapture's "House of Jealous Lovers" and !!!'s "Me and Giuliani Down By the School Yard." It was a strange year, in some respects. The electro-clash scene was winding down, although its short-circuit pulse could be detected in records like MU's "Let's Get Sick." DFA was just kicking off, building a new history from the ruins of New York's ironic dancefloors. Grime was filtering into the mainstream, thanks to Dizzee Rascal and Wiley. The European tech-house boom of Booka Shade and Tomas Andersson was a few years off, but James Holden's "A Break in the Clouds" and Luciano's "Orange Mistake" helped lay the groundwork for the genre that would come to be known, misleadingly or no, as "minimal." Oh, and a couple of garage rockers from Detroit turned stripped-down blues into an enduring anthem for DJs of all stripes -- never mind that it's technically rock 'n' roll.
