The Barenaked Ladies' Serious Side

by Evan Lucy  |  June 26, 2013

500x500

With a penchant for mile-a-minute lyricism and all things quirky, Barenaked Ladies have been pegged as perennial jokesters for the bulk of their career, but few rock acts manage to succeed for 25 years on the strength of Chinese chickens and underwear puns alone. Contrary to popular belief, the Ladies have always had a pervasive maturity, a trait that dates all the way back to 1992's Gordon but generally gets overlooked when speaking about the scope of their discography.

You'll hear it on tracks like the jealous "Just a Toy," the pick-yourself-back-up-again anthem "Crawl" and the tale of innocence lost "In the Car," all of which number among the band's strongest tracks. Here, we explore the Barenaked Ladies' serious side through the years -- along with a few winks and nods to irreverence thrown in for good measure.
