The Brutally Honest Lily Allen

by Dan Weiss  |  May 12, 2014

Lily Allen is one of those pop stars where you always know what's going on with her. On 2009's It's Not Me, It's You, she cried pretty openly about her lover's disinterest in reciprocation on "Not Fair": "You're supposed to care but you never make me scream." But on the new Sheezus, she's found the "L8 Cmmr" of her dreams. Oh, and she still thinks she's fat. Whether or not you think she makes good pop music is likely to take a backseat to whether you think this makes for a compelling pop persona: the repetitive oversharer, the brutal critic of penis size, the fearless new mother who decided to name her third and least-anticipated album after Kanye West's seventh and most-anticipated album. But Allen's tunes are more welcome than they're made out to be, from the first album's strangely harmonic "Everything's Just Wonderful" to the second album's triumphantly mundane "Chinese" to the new one's epic sexism callout "URL Badman."
