The synthesizer unquestionably ruled 2013, with Icona Pop's floor-igniting "I Love It"; singer-and-studio-rat duos like Chairlift, AlunaGeorge and Purity Ring; and bands like the sinuous, underrated Class Actress or the instantly popular Chvrches. You could trace the modern synth-pop boom back to The Knife's addictive "Heartbeats" or The Bird and the Bee's atmospheric indie pop and on to Lykke Li, Annie, Robyn and Grimes. But in 2013, many of these electro-pop divas are bigger than they ever were before, some considered among the top songwriters in the world (we're looking at you, Lorde!).
