The New Divas of Electro-Pop
The synthesizer unquestionably ruled 2013, with Icona Pop's floor-igniting "I Love It"; singer-and-studio-rat duos like Chairlift, AlunaGeorge and Purity Ring; and bands like the sinuous, underrated Class Actress or the instantly popular Chvrches. You could trace the modern synth-pop boom back to The Knife's addictive ["Heartbeats"] or The Bird and the Bee's atmospheric indie pop and on to Lykke Li, Annie, Robyn and Grimes. But in 2013, many of these electro-pop divas are bigger than they ever were before, some considered among the top songwriters in the world (we're looking at you, Lorde!).
