Top 20 Electronic Albums, Summer 2013
by Philip Sherburne | July 24, 2013
It's been a banner summer for electronic music. That's true of effortless, pop-infused house music, as evidenced by effervescent debut albums from Disclosure and Maya Jane Coles; it also goes for more tangled, experimental sounds, as showcased on new records from James Holden, Jon Hopkins and Lebanese musician Rabih Beaini, who also delivers a dazzling new album under his Morphosis alias. Techno comes in from the cold with bold new statements from Detroit pioneer Robert Hood and Cobblestone Jazz's Mathew Jonson, while Chicago's RP Boo pushes footwork forward with his debut album, Legacy. Maxmillion Dunbar's duo, Beautiful Swimmers, explores house music's alternate history, and a slew of artists like Airhead, Gold Panda, Mu-Ziq and The-Drum use established subgenres as jumping off points to explore possible futures.
