#trendingAugust: New Pop Rising
by Jason Gubbels | August 18, 2014
Once again, we here at Rhapsody bow before the all-powerful Billboard algorithm, the mathematical tool that helps determine their up-to-the-second pop rankings on the Trending 140 charts. Not that we're confident we understand their methods (we don't) or don't think the approach couldn't use a little bit of tweaking (it could). But the results have been so consistently entertaining it seems a shame to nitpick.
Our spotlight on #trendingAugust singles draws from both the Trending 140 and Emerging Artists charts, and as usual features plenty of superstar acts, any number of relative newcomers, and several older (we won't say ancient) numbers receiving a new boost as the summer rolls on. That's why both Katy Perry and Arcade Fire get the nod on singles that have been stubbornly hanging around the charts for months, while brand-spanking-new tunes from FKA twigs and R&B fresh face Partynextdoor also take turns under the spotlight. Elsewhere, banjo/scratch duo Maddie & Tae harmonize on "Girl in a Country Song," hip-hop alt legends Dilated Peoples drop new single "Directors," violinist Lindsey Stirling shimmers on "Master of Tides," and former Rilo Kiley frontwoman Jenny Lewis sings of "The Voyager" over acoustic guitar and strings. Don't waste your time trying to spot a theme. It's Twitter -- just hang on and enjoy the ride.
