Label Spotlight: Versatile Records
by Philip Sherburne | June 5, 2012
French electronic music wouldn't be the same without Paris' Versatile Records. The label's artists, like I:Cube (Nicolas Chaix) and Chateau Flight (Chaix with Versatile founder Gilbert Cohen, or DJ Gilb-R), may not enjoy the same kind of fame as their compatriots David Guetta and Daft Punk, but they've been key players on the French scene for 16 years, with a catalog encompassing anthemic piano house, late-night techno, drone disco, left-field pop and even a soundtrack for planetariums.
I:Cube's latest album, "M" Megamix, pulls all those strands together into a seamless, hour-long nostalgia trip for the early days of rave, and for once, it's a grab bag that actually merits taking home with you. In honor of the occasion, we've selected 14 key albums from the label's history, from I:Cube, Chateau Flight, Joakim, Etienne Jaumet and others. And listen to our Label Spotlight: Versatile Records playlist for two hours of highlights, including Cheek's enduring "Sunshine People" and a remix of I:Cube's "Disco Cubizm" by none other than Daft Punk.
