World Cup: Team Argentina
by Judy Cantor-Navas | July 9, 2014
Argentina is futbol country. In the birthplace of Maradona and Messi, the game is a ritual as sacred as the Sunday asado, and every goal is recalled with the drama of a tango. In Argentina, the country's rockers fill stadiums as frequently as soccer matches do, and we've filled our playlist for Argentine fans with national pride, including Los Fabulosos Cadillacs' favorite "El Matador," Soda Stereo's fist-pumping party standard "De Música Ligera" and songs by Maradona worshipers Andres Calamaro and Rodrigo. Current stars Babasónicos and Illya Kuryaki and the Valderramas join classic rockers like Charly Garcia, Sumo and Los Enanitos Verdes. We couldn't leave tango out of a compilation honoring Argentina, and here we've recruited Bajofondo, Gotan Project, Daniel Melingo, and even included the genre's own Maradona, the great Astor Piazzolla, whose track "Vuelvo al Sur" endures as an Argentine anthem.
