While Mehldau is a modern master of the introspective ballad, he uses this solo outing to get even more intense in his playing, going so far as to pound on his keys on occasion. Yet the music is always accessible and beautiful: the pianist gets inside the narrative of a melody in such a personal way, you don't always realize that familiar ground has been left behind.
