Buddy DeFranco went much further than even Benny Goodman to bring the clarinet from the Swing to the Bop age. The instrument may have mysteriously fallen out of favor with the public after the 1940s, but that hasn't stopped DeFranco from topping jazz polls for decades. He currently co-leads a swinging quintet with vibes master Terry Gibbs.
