Electric Light Orchestra

No Answer was the first incarnation of ELO's debut, and there are plenty of tell-tale leftovers from Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood and Bev Bevan's former band, the Move. The pop is immediate and the guitars are huge on tracks like "10538 Overture." Elsewhere, the band's reliance on not-yet-synthesized orchestration makes this album one of the more unique rock debuts.

In which Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne work out their obsession with celli, French horns, and such like. The result is crude chamber music in rock time--pretty tuneful, and sometimes pretty funny as it lumbers along. Might even get interesting if Wood and Lynne weren't also working out their obsession with suffering ladies. Though they do OK by suffering men. (Grade - B-)
