Description

The sophisticated New York Blues sound draws from Jump Blues, Swing, Bop, and early R&B. It flowered during the '40s Swing era when such acts as Lionel Hampton's big band featured blues vocalists in front of a strong beat. While the shouting Big Joe Turner would influence rock 'n' roll, artists Erskine Hawkins and Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson would mix in an accessible blues sound with highly respected and swinging jazz musicianship."
