Description

Though tympani and drums have been part of the orchestra since Handel, it was not until the twentieth century that composers began writing exclusively for Percussion. Seeking new timbres and fresh sound relationships, composers such as Edgard Varese, John Cage and Harry Partch turned to the Percussion ensemble to realize some of their most memorable works, often employing homemade instruments and found objects. Though originally thought to be a short-lived trend, Percussion music has proven remarkably versatile. Contemporary composers such as Steve Reich and Yannis Xenakis have written extremely popular compositions for Percussion, and stars such as Scotland's Evelyn Glennie and Canada's Nexus ensemble now tour the world as featured performers.
