Description

Not to be confused with progressive rock, the "progressive" tag here refers to the layering of the song structure, rather than self-conscious attempts to evolve the house music form. Progressive tracks are usually long, with big riffs, mild dub inflections and extended breakdowns -- no-nonsense pumping house for people who want to dance all night. Early tracks by Leftfield and Underworld are often cited as the blueprint for prog house, while more recent Global Underground compilations such as John Digweed's Sydney and Sasha's Ibiza, along with the labels Fluid, Fire, Yoshitoshi and Bedrock, all showcase the richness of this subgenre, which is best experienced in a big room with a massive sound system. The tribal subgenre is progressive house for those who like their beats even heavier, with more exotic percussion and the occasional world music sample. Most of the best tribal house is currently emerging from Spain, home to Chus & Ceballos and the Stereo Productions label.
