Description

Though rarely recognized in America outside of underground circles, Asian hip-hop is vibrant and continues to grow in terms of commercial appeal. The most visible element of the form is its DJs. Figures such as DJ Honda and DJ Krush have been a presence in America markets since the late-90s and continue to draw fans both here and abroad.

Also worth noting is the contributions of Asian Americans. Chinese freestyle emcee Jin may be the most visible -- thanks in part to his 2003 single "Learn Chinese," produced by the Fugees Wyclef Jean -- but many others have made substantial offerings. The Mountain Brothers, the Visionaries, Lyrics Born and South Asian rapper Panjabi MC have consistently released strong and well-received albums. And DJ crews such as the Beat Junkies and ISP are among the top perpetrators in the nation.
