Lyrical rappers are less concerned with pop hooks than with inventive rhymes that will capture the attention of hardcore Rap fans. Many lyrical rap songs will sound the same to casual listeners. The sparse backdrop to their fast-paced rapping is exactly the point -- they want you to pay attention to their words, not the bells and whistles. Many lyrical rappers sharpen their skills battling other MCs in rhyming duels, which is why so many of their rhymes boast or insult.
