Glenn Gould

Gould reshapes the unusually light dance movements of the French Suite into pointillist fancies that unearth new ways of listening for some Bach fans while irking many other listeners. Even on his modern piano he forgoes the sustain pedal and avoids rubato, often (as on Suite No. 1 VI. Gigue) detaching melodic fragments from the whole, making new phrases that move herky jerky in the right hand and stone solid in the bass.
