Grace Slick

About

Best known as the beautiful hippie icon that fronted Jefferson Airplane, Grace Slick is one of the founding female hard rockers. A decade older than the average Haight-Ashbury LSD fiend, Slick was inspired by the new acid rock movement and actually penned "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit" for her first band, the Great Society, before joining Jefferson Airplane. Her outsized voice, physical beauty and onstage antics helped propel that band to the stardom they carried through their other incarnations: the even more commercially successful (and AM radio friendly) Jefferson Starship and, finally, plain old Starship. Outspoken and unsentimental about musical or personal history, the hard-living Slick remains a great interview, and her occasional solo projects are usually more adventurous than her band work (her early albums are particularly crazy).
