Inspiral Carpets

This questionably necessary but intriguing collection of Madchester's forgotten sons is only available digitally. It begins with 1987's "Garage Full of Flowers," the Inspiral Carpets' first recorded song that was an arse-puckered tribute to the Stone Roses. From there it chronologically follows their Farfisa-toting B-sides stamped by singer Tom Hingley's throaty inflections. In addition to the 16-minute psychedelic epic "Planecrash," it's neat to hear how their fascination with '60s freakbeat inspired the evolution of the band's sound long after Madchester's baggy-trousered hype petered out.
