Most of Jan and Dean's awesome classics are here, including "Honolulu Lulu." But pay close attention to the first five tracks, recorded in Jan's garage when they were just teenagers. Crafting a souped-up take on doo-wop full of multilayered vocal gymnastics, the duo embodied what rock 'n' roll is all about: primitive minimalism exploding with puberty-fueled hi-NRG ("Jenny Lee" is about a burlesque dancer). This stuff is so manic, so in-your-face it borders on the avant garde. No lie.
