A Dance Pop diva since the late '80s, Jody Watley first entered the music industry as a dancer on Soul Train then evolved into the vocalist for R&B group Shalamar. Armed with a sexy set of vocal chords and a pristine pop sensibility with urban appeal, Watley catapulted into chart-topping stardom after her self-titled solo debut was released in 1987, which won her a Grammy for Best New Artist that year.
