Though Life Death LIVE and Freedom is the follow-up to Mellencamp's critically lauded folk-rock set, the similarly titled Life Death Love and Freedom, it was recorded before its predecessor. Instead of heading straight into the studio, Mellencamp hit the road to further develop a batch of new tunes that were shaping up to be the darkest ones of his career. Interestingly enough, this is the first official live album of his career -- and it doesn't contain "Jack and Diane"!
