Julie London

Though she was a low-key torch singer who sounded best in jazz contexts, Julie London spent most of the early '60s cutting rather bland orchestral sets. That all changed with 1965's All Through the Night, a lovely bossa nova-tinged West Coast jazz tour through 10 of Cole Porter's best songs. London is as sexy and wounded as ever but her melancholy mood is once again matched with musicians who suit her -- Bud Shank (sax, flute), Joe Pass (guitar) and Russ Freeman (Chet Baker's pianist of choice). The album ends with a bonus Porter cut from a different London jazz session.
