Kelley Polar

More evidence that the 21st century's initial decade is experiencing a disco uptick. And in Kelley Polar's hands, it's a minimalist pop affair. There's plenty of "lush" here, but it's woven more out of keyboard-and-drum-machine vignettes than the Philly International-style strings and hi-hats widely associated with the genre. Aside from the full-blown fantasia of the marvelous "Entropy Reigns" and "Rosenband," Polar's compositions are guided by the twilight ambience of Arthur Russell, the machine-soul of Yaz and the musical spirit of David Mancuso's loft. It's disco not as style, but as experience.
