Cole stopped trying to rock and returned to his literate, melancholy, English folk-pop roots with the help of producer Stephen Street and musicians from both phases of his career. There isn't a bum track here -- from the shadow-streaked narratives of "Didn't Know That You Cared" and "Happy for You," to the emotionally upbeat "Love Ruins Everything." A career highlight.
