The big moment here is Mariah's loving, smash-hit take on the Jacksons' "I'll Be There." Say what you want about Carey, but there's no question that she's singing each note live on the MTV soundstage, without a "guide track." She may be the last of the truly gifted singers, and at times listening to her is like watching Pedro Martinez pitch.
