This long out-of-print debut shows off Marlena Shaw's low-key, sophisticated approach to penthouse soul, gritty R&B, mellow standards, classy night club jazz and showbiz schmaltz. Sadly, being in control just didn't mesh with the 1960s way of doing business and while Shaw was respected by her peers, she didn't receive the mass acceptance that she deserved. Of course, music fans love the undervalued and ignored, so Marlena Shaw in general and Out of Different Bags in particular are now a cherished part of many soul collections.
