Mastodon's records tend to confuse. Combining hardcore, stoner metal and grindcore with spazz-jazz drumming and the occasional pot-addled instrumental passage, the Atlanta-based quartet defies simple categorization. Remission was the band's second full-length album, and with its barrage of sounds and styles, deservedly thurst them into the "critical fave" realm.
