N.A.S.A.'s dazzling array of collaborations feel like they were forged in some chemically altered hipster netherworld: Lykke Li meets Kanye West! Tom Waits takes on Kool Keith! Karen O, Fatlip and the late ODB -- together! (Note to hip-hop: Sample Karen O more.) It's like a dream come true, or the audio wreckage of a party you really wish you'd been invited to. The heaping platter of talent quickly overshadows the perfunctory beats, which linger in the mid-'90s in a way that suggests head deejays Squeak E. Clean and Zegon are a step ahead on a retro trend that hasn't yet taken hold.

Girl Talk's mash-ups have redeemed the idea of rap rock, and this musical fantasy-football
exercise won't hurt either. On Apollo, L.A. scenemakers Squeak E. Clean and DJ Zegon
pull in a wild roster of stars for what feels like a playful unity jam. Kool Keith and Tom Waits
sound like simpatico nut-job storytellers; John Frusciante and RZA share love for vintage
