Nino Rota's mournful theme to the epic Francis Coppola masterpiece balances a lone, mournful "Taps-"style horn, classical strings and romantic Italian folk music all underpinned with a sense of dread. The rest of his and Carmine Coppola's work on The Godfather is just as creative, and is balanced with elements of American swing flitting in and out of the mix.
