Description of Merseybeat

 
Named for the Mersey River that runs through Liverpool in England, the hometown of the Beatles, Merseybeat, or "Beat" music was the sound of working-class English kids playing American rhythm and blues, with pop overtones. Beyond the Beatles, Merseybeat groups included the Searchers, Gerry and the Pacemakers, and -- surprise -- the Merseybeats.
