In the wake of Autechre and other like-minded pioneers who drop Techno beats with more irregularity than groove, few programmers keep a compelling pulse under all the rhythmic fragmentation. However, Phoenecia plays tug-of-war between rhythmic lines that are as random as a fresh game of Pick-Up Sticks, and a fierce and steady force of Electro beats. They sound random and fragmentary, but slip on and off the 4/4 count to leave you confused but not lost.
