Phoenix's second album helps us to reassess the soft pop sounds of the early to mid-1980s. The creamy, silken production and Thomas Mars' Hall & Oates-esque croon make the era feel ripe for rediscovery. That the band can conjure up this time fondly, while also writing their own synth-disco-folk songs, is remarkable.
