Pio Leyva

About

One of Cuba's elder statesmen of Son, Pio Leyva is enjoying worldwide adulation thanks to his participation in Buena Vista Social Club. Known for his quick wit and improvisational singing ability, Leyva began his singing career in 1932, earning the nickname "El Montunero de Cuba." He performed with Beny More, Nora Morales and Compay Segundo in the '50s. His nasal-toned voice may have lost some of its raw power over the years, but he compensates with a seasoned sense of timing and his mischievous personality. His participation in the Afro-Cuban All Stars and Barbarito Torres' recordings show that this octogenarian is still capable of inspiring his fellow musicians.
