Pistolera

New Yorkers seem to be rediscovering the joy of folkloric music: the city's Pistolera pounds us with rocked-up cumbias like it was their job. Which, of course, it is. Lead singer Sandra Lilia Velasquez could stand to inhabit her voice a little more confidently, but there's nothing more enjoyable than hearing previously at-odds elements like accordion and indie rock drink a Corona and lime together. On songs like "No Te Olvidare" and "Mentirosos" you can hear the direction this group should go -- high on the handkerchief-waving drama, but with a pistol always concealed under the skirt.
