Salt (a.k.a. Cheryl James) and Pepa (a.k.a. Sandra Denton) started rhyming in the mid-'80s. Backed by DJ Spinderella on the ones and twos, they pioneered a headstrong vision and a positive message, shaking things up on the male-dominated rap scene by pushing hot-button topics (AIDS, abusive relationships) and putting down poorly endowed lovers.
