North Carolinian Del McCoury isn't just an Appalachian treasure; he's an American one as well. Since the early 1960s he has been one of the great, if not the greatest, practitioner of both traditional bluegrass and Bill Monroe's high lonesome -- which he has made wholly his own. McCoury is a master stylist, one who pierces the upper reaches of his vocal range to explore happiness, sadness, anguish and anger. On top of all that, there are all the killer bands he's maintained through the years.
