John Mayer, Sara Bareilles, Jack Johnson, Colbie Caillat ... where do these adult-alternative artists come from? Well, Rhapsody has a theory: back in the Clinton years -- when these Billboard mainstays were just pimply teens -- they were digging their parents' musty albums from the '70s (Cat Stevens, Carly, Stevie Wonder) as well as all the cool new pop dominating the charts (R.E.M., Tori, Gin Blossoms). Combine the two worlds and -- voila! -- you have a genre called adult alternative.
