Prince Jazzbo

About

Jazzbo was among the first of the DJ Toasters in the 1970s to achieve widespread popularity, but his particularly gruff "rockstone" vocal delivery was probably even more influential on the hordes of Dancehall artists to follow. His success was due in large part to hilarious and often scathing verbal battles with fellow toaster I-Roy. The two released single after single berating each other, with Jazzbo ultimately receiving the short end of the stick until their reconciliatory "Live Together" in the '80s. Jazzbo worked with many of the greatest producers -- including Bunny Lee, Coxsone Dodd and Glen Brown -- but his best results were with Lee Perry on the classic Ital Corner [Natty Passing Thru], not to mention guest toasting on Perry's crucial Super Ape. Afterwards, Jazzbo formed a few of his own labels to produce top-quality Dub and Dancehall.
