Description of Novelty Rap/Hip-Hop

Popularized in the '80s by Biz Markie, Comedy Rap is the lighter side of hip-hop. Steering clear of the aggressive and violent imagery of Hardcore and Gangsta Rap, Comedy Rappers add a distinct sense of fun and humor to the bass and beats of modern urban music. Although Gangsta Rap soon became the more popular form of hip-hop, tunes such as DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince's "Parents Just Don't Understand" and Bobby Jimmy & the Critters' "Somebody Farted" continue to chart here and there.
