Richard "Groove" Holmes

The standout cut on this 1974 release is the "Theme from Love Story" (yes, that "Love Story"). On this old-fashioned soul jazz gem, "Groove" Holmes lives up to his nickname by effortlessly pushing the melody forward, gaining power as he rolls along until the energy behind the tune is just unstoppable. The majority of this platter goes for a different, very '70s sound, with Holmes placing his Hammond B-3 against the echoey pings of Weldon Irvine's electric keyboards. No complaints, but "Love Story" is where Holmes' heart really is.
