Description of Southern Rock

Early 1970s rock from the American South, Southern Rock is epitomized by the blues-based guitar lyricism of the Allman Brothers (from Macon, Ga.) and the hard-edged, Honky-Tonk-tinged rock of Lynyrd Skynyrd (from Jacksonville, Fla.). Also important are the Charlie Daniels Band, the Marshall Tucker Band and Wet Willie. While most of this genre's original groups have disbanded or moved to the county fair and resort circuit, their legacy lives on in southern-fried acts like the outrageous Nashville P*ssy and Boogie Rock act the Black Crowes.
