Sam Cooke's elegant, searing voice set the tone for soul music but this exhilarating live set showcases a tougher, rougher side of the pop giant. Cooke was a master showman, and here he uses a "reach out and grab 'em" style that he mastered from his years in gospel (he used a smoother style for his white club appearances). Add guitar to this and you get CCR.
