Sara Valenzuela is best known for her work with Mexican funk outfit La Dosis, a band that made waves throughout the 1990s with a series of popular albums. But her solo career veers away from funk and into deeper, electronica-influenced singer-songwriter territory. Mercifully, Valenzuela avoids the Shakira-imitation trap, opting to trade in vocal histrionics for a rich, full sound that nods to techno dancefloors while keeping one eye fixed firmly on the pop market. Her first solo release, Lado Este, rose above the fray thanks to beautiful production and above-average songwriting.
