Every time the mystical, heavily earnest brand of pop Sarah McLachlan has spent most of her career making seems to have gone the way of Lillith Fair and the Dodo bird, she resurrects it -- or at least a variation on it. Case in point: "U Want Me 2" and "Don't Give Up on Us," the two new tracks here. But the reason we fall for it over and over again is also omnipresent on this career retrospective: Even if she never makes anything other than high-drama opuses, the sheer artistry of the Canadian chanteuse's vocals has resulted in some of pop's most sucker-punch-to-the-gut beautiful songs.
