Sonny Rollins

When Sonny Rollins decided to cut a record with Miles Davis' famous rhythm section (Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones) he wasn't planning on also dueling with Miles' sax player, John Coltrane. But 'Trane stepped into the studio and Rollins invited him to jam on the now-famous title cut (the only time the two titans played together in the studio). The rest of the session sans Coltrane, is just as good, if missing the unbridled energy and excitement of the opening cut.
